Evolution of Minecraft versions

Minecraft

Pre-Classic (May 10, 2009)

Pre-Classic was the first version of Minecraft. At that point, the only blocks were grass and cobblestone. There was nothing more to do than break and place blocks. The game was initially going to be called Cavegame.

 

Classic ( May 16, 2009)

Classic introduced a larger variety of blocks and terrain. The game more resembles the current creative mode. Classic had multiplayer support, but a limited world. A recreation of the classic is available free to play.

 

Survival Test (September 12, 2009)

Survival Test were the first stages of the survival mode. It introduced health and mobs. Creepers were created via an error while creating pigs. They originally exploded upon dying. More modern mining was also introduced.

 

Indev (December 23, 2009)

Indev introduced crafting and smelting to the game. Tools were also created for gathering resources. Indev had human mobs called Rana, Black Steve, and Beast Boy. The mobs were removed from any other version.

 

Infdev (February 27, 2010)

There were more useful items and block such as buckets and doors. An extremely rare brick pyramid could randomly generate. However, the structure only contained brick and was removed.

 

Alpha (June 30, 2010)

Alpha introduced more biomes, such as deserts and a new dimension called The Nether. The Nether was based off hell and introduced new mobs. Alpha also introduced Redstone power to the game. This helped revolutionize player creativity. New Mobs such as slimes, chickens and cows were added.

 

Beta (December 20, 2010)

Beta introduced a new creative game mode. This let players fly and build without any limits. Hunger was also added to revamp regeneration. It also allowed the players to sprint. Structures were also added such as the mineshaft, the stronghold, and the villages. Wolves, Silverfish, and Enderman were also added. Enderman were based off the creepypasta Slenderman.


Pocket Edition (August 16, 2011)

This was the first version of Minecraft, initially only for Android, it later released on iOS devices.

 

Minecraft 1.0 (November 18, 2011)

The official version of Minecraft was released at Minecon. Minecon became an annual event for players around the world. Breeding was added to the game to push farming. Other features such as potions and enchanting were also added. Also new mobs including snow golems, villagers and mooshrooms. Mooshrooms can only be found in their new mushroom biome. Blazes were added with a new Nether Fortress. A new dimension called The End was also added. The End contains a new boss mob, the Ender Dragon. The Ender Dragon was created as an ending to Minecraft. After killing the dragon, the player is shown a poem and credits.

 

Minecraft 1.1 (January 12, 2012)

This version introduces a super flat world type along with new mob spawn eggs.

 

Minecraft 1.2.1 (March 1, 2012)

A new Jungle biome was added with a new mob,  the ocelot. Taming an ocelot with fish will give you a pet cat. Iron Golems were also added, spawning in villages of man-made. They will fight off mobs to defend villagers and the player. However, they will not fight off creepers.

 

Xbox 360 Edition (May 9, 2012)

This is the first console version of Minecraft. The game was first displayed at Minecon 2011. Skin Packs were introduced rather than custom skins. The game would continue to have an Xbox One Edition.

 

Minecraft 1.3.1 (August 1, 2012)

This version introduced the Jungle and Desert Temples. Inside are chests with loot. But also traps.

 

Minecraft 1.4.2 (October 25, 2012)

Command Blocks were introduced revolutionising custom maps. And new mobs: The Bat and Witch. Either Skeleton was also added to the Nether. With their heads, you can make a new boss. The Wither.


Minecraft 1.5 (March 13, 2013)

Redstone gained many new additions to expand on creativity.


Minecraft 1.6 (July 1, 2013)

Horses, Donkeys and Mules were added to the game. Players can interact with them by giving chests and armour. New blocks were also added to the game.


Minecraft 1.7 (October 25, 2013)

This added a large variety of biomes to the game.


PlayStation 3 Edition (December 17, 2013)

PlayStation 3 Edition was announced at Gamescom 2013. The game was almost identical to the Xbox 360 Edition. PlayStation 5 would later get an edition like Xbox One.


Minecraft 1.8 (September 2, 2014)

This version introduced a new structure, the Ocean Monument. Inside are a new mob type called Sea Guardians. Ocean Monuments contain a large variety of new blocks. Rabbits have also been added to the game.


Windows 10 Edition (July 29, 2015)

This was a new version of Minecraft running off a new engine. It would later go in to form Bedrock Edition. Bedrock Edition allows players of different devices to play together.


Minecraft 1.9 (February 29, 2016)

This version changed up combat greatly, introducing dual wielding. Combat also now has a charge up after swinging. Along with shields being added to the game. New structures were also added to the end, called End Cities. They contain the new mob called shulkers. When hit, the player gains a levitation effect. They also contain Elytras, an item allowing the player to glide.

 

Minecraft 1.10 (June 8, 2016)

New enemy mobs, the Stray and Husk were added. Along with Polar Bears. New Natural structures and blocks were also added.

 

Minecraft 1.11 (November 14, 2016)

This added a variety of new mobs, such as liamas, along with Evokers, Vindicators and Vex. New items and decorative blocks were also added.

 

Nintendo Switch Edition (May 11, 2017)

Nintendo Switch Edition was short-lived and available for a month. It was discontinued when the Bedrock edition was released for the Switch. However, owners of Switch Edition could upgrade for free.


Minecraft 1.12 (June 7, 2017)

This version focused on making Minecraft more colourful and vibrant. A large variety of new blocks were added, and older blocks were retextured. Parrots were also introduced.


Minecraft 1.13 (July 18, 2018)

This version focused on making the oceans of Minecraft more interesting. This meant adding new blocks, natural structures, and mobs. Along with new items such as the Trident.


Minecraft 1.14 (April 23, 2019)

This version focused on expanding on villages and adding Pillagers. Pillagers will raid villages for you to try and defend. The Ravager is a new mob added to assist the pillagers. Wandering villagers were also added so you can trade without finding a village. Foxes and Pandas were also added to the game.

 

Minecraft 1.15 (December 10, 2019)

This version focused on adding Bees to Minecraft. This included adding honey to the game.

 

Minecraft 1.16 (July 23, 2020)

This update focused on the Nether. Adding new mobs and biomes. Among them were hoglin and zoglin.

 

Minecraft 1.17 (2021)

This update came with new block structures and it also came with the Caves and Cliffs update and included new caves and mountain features.
